Golf classic success in Skerries

A sincere thanks to all those who took part in the recent Skerries-Sodo Golf Classic, which raised more than €3,500 for the ongoing community campaign for Ethiopia.

The event was held at Skerries Golf Club on Friday, 15th May last, and attracted great support from local golfers. The organisers are grateful to all those who supported the event.

On the same night as the classic Skerries Sodo benefitted from comedian Joe Rooney'sefforts, when he threw his weight behind the campaign with a show at Dublin's Vicar Street venue. Best known as Fr. Damo and Timmy from the Killnaskully hit TV show, Joe generously donated 50% of proceeds from his Vicar Street show to the Skerries Sodo project.

Charity ball this Summer

A charity ball in aid of the Skerries Sodo campaign in Ethiopia was held by the group at the Grand Hotel in Malahide, in late Summer.

The event was a huge success, with a large attendance coming along to enjoy a gourmet meal, dance, raffle and auction for some great prizes which had been sponsored on the night. Tickets for the event were priced at €90.

Ministerial visit

Green Party Junior Minister and local TD Trevor Sargent visited the Sodo Project, during a fact finding visit to Ethiopia last last year.

The local representative spoke highly of the work of Self Help Africa following his visit, and said that it was clear that the organisation was making a real impact on the lives of local people.

Christmas collections

Christmas collections, a photographic exhibition and charity Christmas single were amongst the activities that took place in Skerries last December, as the local support group for Sodo in Ethiopia redoubled their efforts, and raised thousands of euro to support one of Self Help Africa's projects in Ethiopia. The pre-Christmas collections were again hugely successful, while compliments are also due to Paul Kelly for his 'Song for Sodo' charity single, which hit all the right notes.

Community support

The Skerries Sodo Community Group has raised €70,000 for Self Help Africa since the it was first established in the North Dublin town, four years ago.
The project provides a real and tangible link between an Irish and African community, and offers Irish people to engage directly in the development process, as it happens at grassroots level.

Skerries fund-raising trek to Ethiopia

The centre-piece of Skerries Sodo's fund-raising campaign for 2009 was a 12 day trek for supporters to Ethiopia.

The primary focus was on a week of walking in the country's spectacular Simien Mountains, but during the visit the participants also spent a number of days visiting Self Help Africa's programmes in Sodo, and a number of days in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa.

They met with staff in Sodo and with communities who are working with the project, and got an opportunity to see at first hand the positive effects that the work they are supporting is having on the lives of local people.
