Farmers 'Grow Fund'

Irish farmers have supported the Self Help Africa Grow Fund since the mid-1980's.

Through co-operative creamery payments, dairy farmer suppliers to nearly 20 Irish creameries have agreed to making a deduction to the benefit of Self Help Africa.

This money has been used to plant trees, provide seeds, construct ponds and boreholes, develop sustainable agricultural systems, and support a broad range of activities designed to improve yields, diversify crop production, and help rural African communities to make the most of the land that they have available.

Since 1988, more than 20 million tree seedlings have been planted, a figure which is set to more than double in the coming four years.

New food seed varieties have been introduced, close links forged with agricultural research institutes in all of the countries where we work, and technologies appropriate to small-holding African farmers are being rolled out and implemented on an ongoing basis.

Schools and health clinics have also been constructed, and vital training provided in a whole host of areas, so that Africans can work their way to a future that is free from famine, aid dependence and need.
