Members of Mkoko village horticulture club display their cabbages - Bvumbwe Chatuluka (left) with Maloiti Pofera (in yellow) and Pitilosi Foliasi
Horticulture farming success in Malawi
As you can see by the size of his cabbages, Bvumbwe Chatuluka (left) has seen huge benefits since becoming involved in a farming group at Self Help Africa’s project in Masumba, Malawi.

With your support, we could help thousands of other farmers like Bvumbwe who have enthusiasm but lack the tools and education to become successful farmers.
Find out how Bvumbwe went from a struggling subsistence farmer to a supplier of vegetables.

More Aid for African Agriculture

Self Help Africa has contributed to a new report by the UK Food Group.
After decades of decline, aid to African agriculture is back on the international policy agenda in the context of climate change, the current food and energy price crises and the consequent demands for hundreds of billions of dollars in new investment in agriculture. The evidence presented in this report shows that donors have been using Agriculture Aid to promote globalisation and the production of food and fuel, primarily for more affluent markets, with safety nets for the poor who lose out.

Clare Wearden, SHA Funding Manager, and Gill Summers, Zurich

Innovative ideas help farmers’ dreams become a reality

A group of employees from the Zurich Financial Services were tasked by their bosses to come up with ideas to grow the company. The company then generously rewarded the best ideas with a donation to a charity of the winner’s choice. Gill Summers from Zurich presented Clare Wearden, SHA Funding Manager, with a cheque for £745 in December. Employees from Zurich are also holding a carol singing collection for Self Help Africa. Gill Summers said:
"On behalf of Self Help Africa I am delighted that the innovative ideas created by the Zurich employees could be of benefit both to Zurich and to the families in Zambia who will be using the funds raised for sustainable growth in their local communities."
